New Telematics System for Diverse Applications: PTV Software for IBM Telematics Box
Karlsruhe, Germany, November 13, 2006. IBM is developing a telematics box for a wide range of application areas and industries worldwide. This solution especially designed for the logistics and telematics market will be launched first in Dubai where it will be used in fleet management. The system is also aimed at supporting toll operators and insurance companies. It demands a regular update of information and a high level of flexibility. IBM's partner PTV, headquartered in Karlsruhe/Germany, provides IT technology complying with these requirements.
IBM has joined forces with PTV to develop this new telematics solution. The built-in telematics box allows data exchange between the vehicle and a control centre. It provides information about the vehicle's position, its speed and the route taken, using a GPS-based map matching method. The data can either be buffered or sent online to a control centre. PTV's unique tile technology enables the control centre to transmit only currently required map information to the end device, which means that the data to be transmitted and the memory capacity claimed at the box are minimized. In addition, users no longer have to pre-install map data on their mobile device.
IBM's aim is to develop a device highly adaptable to various application areas. Toll operators, for instance, will be able to easily calculate exact road user charges. But also insurance companies, fleet operators or transportation professionals are interested in gaining information about vehicle utilization. PTV's VISUM software solution allows users to edit the maps according to their specific needs at any time and add the desired attributes, such as toll information.
The telematics box will be launched first in Dubai where it will be used in traffic and transportation management and for speed limit control. Operation worldwide will include further use cases, such as toll operation systems or the insurance scheme "pay as you drive".
