Multi-Modal Microscopic Simulation
PTV has successfully applied VISSIM to analyze and answer diverse transportation questions facing hundreds of communities throughout North America. After understanding the needs of our clients, our approach to these projects is from a systems perspective. The transportation system is composed of many elements (e.g., freeways, transit, arterials, pedestrian areas, bike routes, stadiums, etc.) that work together to serve the mobility needs of a given area. Improvements to one element may influence the performance of another element. VISSIM enables us to merge all or a portion of these elements together in order for stakeholders to better understand the benefits and impacts of various alternatives. The proven and industry-accepted analysis capabilities of VISSIM provide credible technical information to the decision making process. The technical analysis results are complimented by VISSIM’s graphical animation that allows complex and technical alternatives to be clearly and concisely explained to elected officials, technical staff and the public.
The types of projects cover the multi-modal spectrum with examples including:
Freeways
- Active Traffic Management
- Managed lanes (e.g., HOT + HOV lanes)
- ITS assessments (e.g., ramp metering)
- Incident management + evacuation planning
- Non-traditional interchange and intersection assessments
Arterial streets
- Adaptive signal control
- Railroad preemption
- Access management
- Software- and hardware-in-the loop simulation
Transit
- Bus rapid transit
- Light rail transit and streetcar
- Transit signal priority
- Conditional priority
- Multi-modal centers
Pedestrians and Bicyclists
- Multi-modal transit/transfer centers
- Pedestrian and bike LOS analyses
- Shared and exclusive bike lanes
- Evacuation planning
- Transit platforms
Additional Applications
- Ferry terminal analyses
- On-site circulation
- Border crossings
- Toll roads and plazas
